Who Suits What
If you have a thin long elegant neck then the collar style neck is perfect for you.
If you portray low or strapless types tops with no flaws to your neck or upper chest then you can most aptly do justice to a choker necklace.
The princess style is the most common and most favored beaded necklace because it is the most forgiving. If you have a thicker neck or some minor flaws this type of necklace seems to downplay them.
If you have a thick neck or severe flaws where you tend to wear high collared tops or turtle necks then the best complimentary style necklace for you will be the Matinee length styled necklace.
If you have a neck shape or size or flaws that you don't like then don't think that you cannot still wear a low cut dress. Just simply wear an opera style stunning necklace. The length of this necklace draws the eye to the chest and away from the neck.
If you want to create an overall effect instead of a focal point with your necklace then wear the rope necklace as a single strand. It draws the eye to the entire length of the body.
The Personal Fit
Now that you know the sizes of the necklaces and what looks good on who you must remember that it will also come down to where exactly is the necklace going to come to rest. We know the sizes of the necklaces but the individual size of every person wearing them is not known. In order for jewelry manufacturers to produce a necklace that is somewhat universal they will follow a standard using the men's length as the base guide. In reference to men to come to the base of the throat an 18 inched chain is required. To lie at the collar bone then a 20 inch necklace is required and finally to have one end at the sternum it would need to be 24 inches.
If you really want to find a quick and fast way to judge what's best for you just measure your neck and add two inches to it and then find the necklace that you like closest to that size.
Styles of Necklaces
Not only does one have to be concerned about the length of the necklace and what works best for the individual. The style of the necklace is of prime importance as well.

Chains
Chains will work extremely well as being simplistic yet elegant. They are not the favored choice when it comes to formal wear though because you may want the neck ware to be the focal point that leads the eye to your dress. You will also have the choice of thin, medium or thick. Which you choose really comes down to choice, but there are a few things that you may want to keep in mind. If you are going casual then you may find the thicker types of chains are more outstanding, especially when laying again a high neck sweater or open shirt. Then for casual dressy the thinner chains are a bit more delicate and add that effect to the dressy casual. Its this change that takes the attire from the casual to the casual dressy.
Pendants
These are such a standard piece of jewelry when it comes to neck décor. They are wonderful because they can be wore for almost any occasion just by making the right choice of the pendant itself. If you are going casual then you don't want your pendant to be too bold. On the other hand if you are going formal then you want your pendant to be bold but not flashy.
Lockets
Lockets go way back in time. For this reason they go with the antique type or quaint simple mode of dress for formal. They depict a Victorian era. They are simply beautiful when worn on a black turtle neck for casual dressy.
Beaded
The beaded necklaces work very much like the pendant characteristics. Ideally for the casual and casually dressy you may opt for the more solid type stones. If you are going semi formal then the glass type beads are classic. Then for formal of course the diamonds, gold and silver beads as well as the pearls would be the number one choice. Included in this group one could add the svorskey crystals as well.
The Complementing Colors
As you can see if you really want to make a fashion statement then you need to give serious consideration to many aspects when making your necklace choice. We have talked about lengths, sizes and styles. It doesn't end there now we have to determine how to pick color. This refers to colors of the stones or colors of the chains.
Chains
You are going to need to decide between gold's which Is warm and silver which is cools. If you want your chain to complement your skin then go with your warm or cool tones. If you have warm skin tones and you use a silver necklace it could make your skin look yellow. On the other hand if you use gold on cool skin tones then you could end up looking like you have a blue tinge to your skin.
Stones
When it comes to the colors of the stones just use the same train of thought you would use when color coordinating the rest of your outfit. If you want the necklace to be the focal point then go with something that is strong and vibrant in color. It doesn't matter whether it is solid or crystal colors. On the other hand if you want your necklace to compliment your outfit then down play the color and let it enhance the primary color of your outfit.
Looking After your Valuables
Proper storage of your necklaces is important. Probably the most simple way of keeping your necklaces in proper condition is to keep them in the necklace boxes they came in. Just make sure the boxes are lined so the necklace doesn't get scratched over time. Felt, or velvet will work nicely. If you had several necklaces then simply label the box with a description of what it holds.
You don't want to store your necklaces particularly your chains where they are going to be bent. This weakens the links.
Maintenance
Pearls are strung on fine threads or strings. Over years this string tends to rot. Ideally what you should do is have the jeweler restring your pearls. Clean chains with a good commercial jewelry cleaner. For the fine stones a light baby shampoo and a soft toothbrush will work nicely. Make sure you wipe the soap residue off with a soft damp cloth then dry them with another one.
